[Poll] Galaxy S9 fingerprint reader stops responding at times, needs a reboot to fix

It’s never a good thing when you make a good change on the hardware front only for the software part to not keep up, and that seems to be the case for the fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Multiple users on the XDA forums are reporting that the fingerprint sensor on their phone stops responding from time to time; it’s something we have run into on one of our handsets as well, and going into the fingerprint reader settings makes the phone suggest a reboot.

Galaxy S9 fingerprint sensor may not be fully stable

It’s unclear if the issue has been fixed in the first software update that was rolled out to the Galaxy S9 and S9+. If it’s a hardware issue, an update won’t fix it, and so far, Samsung hasn’t made any official statements on the matter. We’ve reached out to the company, though, and will update this post with their response as soon as we get one. For now, disabling fingerprint sensor gestures (accessible in the Settings » Advanced features menu), which let you swipe down on the sensor to access the notification shade and swipe up to open Samsung Pay, seems to be a temporary solution. Not the best solution, but given the frequency with which the sensor seems to stop working, it’s the only solution one can try out at the moment.

Has the fingerprint reader stopped working for you on the Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+? Let us know by voting in the poll below and through the comments section. Be sure to tell us if the issue occurs for you even after installing the update that Samsung has rolled out in various markets ahead of the day the two phones go on sale.

Does the Galaxy S9 fingerprint sensor stop working for you from time to time?

Thanks, Jack Peh!

I know why
When turn on finger sensor gesture it blocks fingerprint sensor. So i turned it off the fingerprint works sooooooo good without any issue.
Thats it

I paid for things like the gesture sensor in the fingerprint scan … turn it off, it’s not a solution…

I asked on Samsung Members and they told me that I have to wait for a software update with the fix.

The voting indicates that there are users who have updated and even then they have not been solved… 🙁

I am Spanish, my phone has the version of the so corresponding to europe / spain and it happens to me the second day of having it.

Samsung told me that there were no incidents about it even though I insisted and insisted … the only solution they offer me is to return it.

It has happened to me as well. Can’t samsung not screw up every time they make a phone. From the lags, which will happen on the S9 no doubt, to the slow software updates and now this? The finger print scanner is not as fast and accurate as other phones as well. Fail!

I dont have the finger print sensor issue on my s9plus but i do have other issues…first it becomes laggy and stutters during the transition between home screen and app screen. It requires multiple swipes to access either. Secondly in my browser it often leaves a keyboard layout over my sceen. Keyboard layout is transparent and at same position where the keyboard would be if i had used it…this problem is solved only when i restart the browser app. Using Dolphin browser. But i think that this problem has also happened in my settings app. If anyone else having similar… Read more »

don’t have this issue thankfully, but Unfortunately I do with the intelligent scan launches. I keep it on a wireless charging stand at work and I have to pick up my phone from the top of the device, the scanning takes place immediately off the stand and so registers my “face” i.e. my hand, being too close to the device, meaning I have to re launch the scanner. Every time.

And why couldn’t they make it a little bigger? It is too tiny.
