Introduction

Samsung's Galaxy S series is more than a decade old and still going strong. The Galaxy S24 should follow a yearly launch schedule and hit the market in early 2024. It will be one of the most interesting sequels following the Galaxy S23 because it may not represent a huge change in design. Conversely, it may have to rely on better hardware upgrades and software advancements to stay appealing.

Design

Samsung appears to have hit the pinnacle of smartphone design with the Galaxy S23 series, so it's easy to assume that the Galaxy S24 won't be all that different.

The 2024 model will likely have a flat display and back panel, along with a slightly curved metal frame and no contour cutout for the rear-facing camera system.

The Galaxy S24 will likely continue to have an Infinity-O display cutout for the selfie camera, as Under-Panel Camera technology doesn't seem to have evolved much over the past couple of years.

Specifications

Samsung will is expected to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset for the Galaxy S24, but the 2024 flagship will also mark the return of Exynos. Rumors say there will be no Snapdragon exclusivity as it was for the Galaxy S23 lineup.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC has one Cortex-X4 CPU core clocked at up to 3.3GHz, five performance cores running at up to 3.2GHz and two efficiency CPU cores @2.3Ghz.

The SoC also sports a new Adreno GPU that claims 25% better performance, 25% improved power efficiency, and 40% better Ray Tracking than its predecessor.

In parallel to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the Galaxy S24 will be powered by the Exynos 2400 chip in some markets. Samsung says the in-house solution is 70% faster than the Exynos 2200 and has 14.7x better AI processing. The chip features a new Xclipse 940 GPU.

Display

The Galaxy S24 will likely have a flat display, similar to the Galaxy S23. The panel could also retain the same resolution and maximum refresh rate of 120Hz, but Samsung may try to upgrade brightness levels above 1,750 nits, possibly aiming for 2,000 nits or more. One rumor suggests the Galaxy S24 display could reach 2,500 nits.

Camera

Although the Galaxy S24 is unlikely to receive a camera with 10X optical zoom anytime soon, there is a chance that the 2024 flagship model may receive better rear-facing cameras and upgraded sensors.

On the software side, two relatively minor but interesting additions might consist of lock screen shortcuts to Instagram and Snapchat cameras.

Software and features

Android 14 is already available, and several devices have received the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 update in late 2023. The upcoming Galaxy S24 should rock Android 14 at launch, but it might also sport a newer One UI update, possibly One UI 6.1.

At the very least, Samsung will guarantee four major OS upgrades and five years of security patches for the Galaxy S24. It remains to be seen if Samsung will want to offer more than four OS upgrades, seeing how Google promised seven years of firmware support.

One main feature through which Samsung will try to differentiate the Galaxy S24 from its predecessors is AI. Samsung will supposedly release the Galaxy S24 as an AI phone, and the first Galaxy AI feature Samsung revealed for 2024 is AI Live Translate Call.

This Live Translate feature enabled by AI will allow users to carry phone conversations with people in other languages in real time.

Availability and price

Judging by past Unpacked events, Samsung could release the Galaxy S24 in January or February 2024.

According to a leak, the Galaxy S24 will be unveiled in San Jose on January 17, 2024.

The base Galaxy S24 model may cost the same as the S23, i.e., $799, or more, depending on market conditions and specifications.
