Samsung Galaxy Ring

Introduction

Due to many patent applications over the years, people always entertained the idea that Samsung is developing a smart ring. But in 2023, leaks and rumors picked up, and it looks like Samsung is truly on its way to releasing such a wearable device.

The industry has been referring to this wearable device as “Galaxy Ring.” The name is not confirmed, as Samsung trademarked a dozen other monikers in 2023 alone. Nevertheless, people seem to gravitate towards the Galaxy Ring name, and we'll continue using it for consistency, at least for the time being.

Design

So, what is the Galaxy Ring? From what we know thus far, the Galaxy Ring is a smart ring capable of tracking the user's health and fitness data like a Galaxy Watch would. Possibly, it could do more, but there's little information to go by.

Needless to say, the main difference between a Watch and the Galaxy Ring is that users would wear the latter around their fingers rather than their wrists. Exactly how this ring will look like is unknown. Apart from patent applications that are admittedly ancient by now (here's one from 2016), there's nothing to go by to determine what the Galaxy Ring looks like. It could be a simple loop with no decorations, or it might not. Color options and materials are also a mystery.

Specifications

There's very little known about the Galaxy Ring's hardware specifications. However, previous reports said the wearable will have health-tracking capabilities enabled by a PPG (Photoplethysmography) sensor and will offer ECG (Electrocardiogram) capabilities similar to a Galaxy Watch.

In fact, some reports say that the Galaxy Ring might be capable of tracking the user's health more accurately than traditional Samsung smartwatches.

Bluetooth connectivity is almost a given, but it's unclear if the Galaxy Ring will offer NFC capabilities. If it will, it may open new possibilities for Samsung Pay and other mobile payment platforms.

There's no information on whether the Galaxy Ring has touch sensitivity sensors. Likewise, it's unclear if it has a minuscule display, LEDs, vibration motors, or other such ways of offering information. However, it should be compatible with the Samsung Health platform and, supposedly, SmartThings Find.

Price and Availability

The latest rumors indicate that Samsung may unveil the Galaxy Ring at the same Unpacked event where the Galaxy S24 smartphone series will debut. Hence, the Galaxy Ring may be unveiled in January 2024.

Pricing and release date details are unknown. However, we're guessing the Galaxy Ring won't cost as much as a Galaxy Watch 6, which starts at $299.
