Samsung has started rolling out its upgraded Sleep Apnea feature to the Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Watch 9, and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. Announced a few days ago, the update is arriving via the Samsung Health Monitor app, and several older Galaxy Watches will also get the feature in the near future.

This rollout makes Samsung the world's first company to bring a sleep apnea risk detection feature to a smart ring.

What is new with the upgraded Sleep Apnea feature?

Samsung has already received approval from the US FDA and South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) for the upgraded feature. It builds upon Samsung's original Sleep Apnea feature, which was the first of its kind to receive US FDA De Novo authorization.

It analyzes a user's sleep vitals in greater depth than the previous version. Instead of just providing a basic risk assessment, it offers insights into the levels of breathing disruptions detected. This allows users to better understand their condition and have more informed conversations with a healthcare professional.

Users who own both a Galaxy Ring and an eligible Galaxy Watch can choose between the two devices for sleep apnea detection, depending on which one they find more comfortable to wear while sleeping.

Which devices are eligible to get this feature?

The feature is currently available on Galaxy Watches running Wear OS 7.0 and One UI 9.0 Watch. It will expand to the Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Watch Ultra (2024 and 2025 versions), Galaxy Watch 8, and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic via a future software update.

The feature requires just two nights of sleep data within a 10-day period and is available for users aged 18 years and older.
