The Galaxy S6 Active’s 3,500 mAh battery is an insult to consumers of the regular Galaxy S6

So the Galaxy S6 Active was made official yesterday, but instead of its rugged exterior, the large battery powering the phone was the most notable thing about it. The Galaxy S6 Active features a 3,500 mAh battery, which is almost 1,000 mAh more than the battery on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. I get it: the S6 Active is made for the outdoorsy types, and battery life is a critical thing for when you’re out and about and aren’t expected to have easy access to a wall socket. But the large battery on the phone is also a huge insult to those who bought the standard Galaxy S6 flagships.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have respectable battery life for the 2,500/2,600 mAh batteries under the hood. The efficient Exynos processor is one of the key reasons why these phones can offer at least average battery life (which would be better if not for Lollipop’s inherent issues) despite having a Quad HD display and other high-end hardware. But there is no denying the fact that Samsung opted to make its latest flagships anorexically thin instead of focusing on battery life, and simply put in wireless charging support to try and make up for what is an extreme case of form over function.

… an extreme case of form over function.

But while we were only just getting used to the fact that we will have to live with the unimpressive battery life on the S6 duo, Samsung has now come out with the Galaxy S6 Active, making us wonder if the company could have done something to make the batteries on the S6 and S6 edge even slightly smaller. Okay, so maybe a 3,000 mAh battery would be a stretch and ruin the immaculate designs, but Samsung could have at least stuck to the 2,800 mAh battery from the Galaxy S5.

The Galaxy S6 Active is exclusive to North American carrier AT&T for now, so only a very small portion of consumers will actually be able to get their hands on one. But still, since the moment the phone was announced, I’ve almost been seething with anger about the fact that the S6 Active will be able to offer battery life considerably higher than what my S6 edge can manage.

It’s nothing less than an insult to the millions that have bought the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, and I really hope Samsung doesn’t make the same mistake again. The company has fixed most of its shortcomings with the sixth-generation Galaxy S, and it would be a major disappointment if 2016 brings us the next iteration with handicapped battery life once again.

Here’s hoping Samsung can quicken its pace on those denser batteries it is working on.

This is BS.(I am talking about the original article) What about HTC M9+ ? is it an insult to HTC m9 customers? -no About iPhone 6+ having FHD and OIS but iPhone 6? -didn’t notice Toyota making Prius and then “Prius alpha” with more PASSENGER CAPACITY? -oo? That’s life dude. Get on with it. So all in all ABHIJEET M. , feeling like being insulted is your problem. IMO those are not newsworthy nor should be considered such. And no company ever dreams of insulting their customers. FYI, we android-ers should at least know how to do minor tweaks to… Read more »

Really? You mean after years of hearing people complain that their phones weren’t “premium” enough because they were plastic, not thin enough because of the removable battery and sd slot, but “iPhone” enough for the whiny little sissy types that should have just gotten an iPhone instead?

They finally gave all you squeaky wheels the grease you wanted, then released the classic ruggedized galaxy that all the true Sammy fanboys love. And all you can do is COMPLAIN ABOUT IT!

Go buy an iPhone buddy, you deserve one.

Guywithhighiq – the difference is that i wrote the truth. What you say that apple copied are mostly lies. I only read your list until when you said apple copied the edges from samsung ativ and aluminium design from samsung. Samsung fanboy fantasy world.

GuyWithHighIQ
GuyWithHighIQ

What I wrote is the truth as well. I’m just confused why you make such a big deal about it. I don’t see anyone attacking Apple for copying when they placed the power button on the right, so why make such a big deal when Samsung places the audio jack on the bottom? These are such petty issues.
There is no conceivable way to make a product without having some of the elements of the product resemble products released before it.

isroisro
isroisro

So when i list what samsung copied it is “progression of technology”, when ios has multitasking it is copying samsung. Retarded fanboy logic. Also you say samsung has biggest customer satisfaction? That pole was done in the us. In the US even the iphone 5c sells better than samsung. So you are comparing a huge mass of iphone users with a small mass of fanatics who bought samsung. Of course the fanatics will more easily say they are happy. Check out most sold phones in the US first

GuyWithHighIQ
GuyWithHighIQ

You need to learn how to read. I said “By your standard”. The list of “copying” you gave me as just as idiotic and petty as the list I gave you. It was to prove how absurd your argument was.

Also, your logic about sales numbers is flawed, since the Galaxy S and Note aren’t niche phones in the US. Relative measurements can be compared fairly since the S and Note phones still sell a sizeable amount.
By your flawed logic, htc, Motorola and SONY’s satisfaction ratings should be even higher than Samsung’s, yet they aren’t.

I agree. It’s not an insult because they put a big battery in a butt-ugly phone. It’s an insult because we all know it would have been possible to put a slightly bigger battery in the s6 without too much change in thickness; but Samsung didn’t. then with the active, the proved it was possible to put a much bigger battery in a phone that is only 2mm thicker than the S6. In theory, Samsung could have added 1mm to the S6 and 500 more mAh. I’m coming from a 2012 Nokia 808, who’s ancient battery still outperforms my new… Read more »

“It’s nothing less than an insult to the millions that have bought the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge”

Well, I disagree. The insult was made by these “millions” of consumers who literally encouraged Samsung on its way to Apple-ization by throwing their money at Samsung’s face. They are the insult.

and to wake you samsung fanatics here are the things samsung copied on the s6: fingerprint sensor (iphone/motorolla), thickness (iphone), edge shape (iphone), glass design (iphone -sony z1 was after iphone), double click for camera (lg), multi tasking (lg), changed fingerprint sensor design (to fit iphone), no rem batt and sd card (iphone), kies (iphone), milk (iphone and spotify etc), watch pairing and availability (iphone watch rumors), 64 bit proc (iphone), android interface (common with other phones with ugly laggy touchwizz on top), QHD screen (lg), fast charging (oppo and comes from qualcomm not invented by samsung), no radio (iphone),… Read more »

Nah, I disagree. You obviously don’t have Apple devices or have your head shoved too far up their rectum to admit it.

iOS updates are stealth malware that lag and crash your device. My iPad 3 with iOS 8.3 lags more than Android phones from 5 years back.

Ios9 copied samsung because multitasking? Multi tasking was on lg way before it was on samsung, dear fan boys. It was on Windows way before it was on LG so thing again. Android M and L copied a lot from ios and the other way around so stop being excited fanatics and open your eyes. Also the feature on samsung is so nice that it lags so that people cant use it. Also when you close one app and try to leave the other app one and use the rest of the screen for the phone it closes ur other… Read more »

lol such butthurt. You sound like JK Shin stole your wife.

The fact is, Samsung flagships have the highest consumer satisfaction, so they must be doing something right.

I can’t say the same thing about iOS 7 and 8 on my iPad 3. There is lag everywhere.

The battery in S6 is great! And the S6 is fantastic in general. So much better than my S5, even though the S5 is a nice smartphone. It’s a huge update from S5 to S6 and well worth the money (unless waterproof is a show stopper). I have had S, S2, S3, S5 and now S6. After switching off things like Google Now and other stuff that was wasting battery, a typical day I usually have close to 70% when it’s bedtime. (close to) 70%! I always have GPS, Mobile Data, WiFi and Bluetooth ON. A typical day I make… Read more »

really dont like the way Samsug are moving which is why this time I moved to an iphone 6 plus, never thought I would having owned every single Galaxy S phone up to the S5, just saw no reason to have a samsung phone any more as no rem batt or SD. Also see recent IOS 9 info, iphone 4s is getting IOS9, that will be its 5th OS iteration its had installed on it, i’d be impressed if Samsung put lollipop on the Galaxy s2 or even the S3 but that will never happen. Does the S6 Active have wireless charging too? I know it is not removable but on top of all this… am I the only person who carries a portable charger? they’re cheap and extremely useful. you can get 10,000mAh for like 15 quid. or even solar ones too. Battery life isn’t so much of an issue if you have one with you.

MStuart
MStuart

How is it an insult? You know what you’re getting, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Yes, it’d like it to be a bit thicker so it could accommodate a bigger battery but it’s not like you cannot find out beforehand what you’re getting into. You’re paying for a thin and beautiful design, and if that’s not what you’re looking for, well, there are other phones in the market.

As a Samsung customer, I feel more insulted about the lack of timely updates (or lack thereof) than anything else, really.

harryisme

Meh the battery life on my S6 is pretty good, so I’m not that upset plus usually takes about and hour or so to top up, so for the first time in over almost 20 years of owning a mobile phone I don’t leave it to charge overnight. Just put it to charge an hour before bed or soon as I wake up and it’s fully charged y the time I’m ready to leave….it’s brilliant. Yeah I’d like a bigger battery but it’s not that much as an issue as I originally thought it would be. I’m not surprised at… Read more »

With S6 Samsung made what people (and marketing) want, a phone as thinner as possible. And the battery is what they can put in a phone as thinner as possible. S6 Active has a 3500 Mah battery, but for me is one of the ugliest device I’ve ever seen…

I’ve been wondering why Samsung doesn’t make their phones a little big bigger, so the camera module wouldn’t stick out like it does now. Maybe it would make them look even more like iPhones, but so what… unless it’s actually a lawsuit thing. 😀 But anyways, I’m still happy with my S6… it’s a huge upgrade from S3, which wasn’t that bad actually. 🙂 And with my usage, I get 1-2 days on battery so I’m satisfied. More would be better of course, but I do have chargers at home and at work + some power banks to take along… Read more »

Oh come on. We Note 4 and Note Edge people bought the latest device last fall, only to find out that Samsung has been holding out on us, and now that Samsung has our money, suddenly they don’t care and they’re off to sell the Next Big Thing … which WAS the S6. Anyone who bought the S6 knowing the battery was smaller than most phones deserves what they get. There’s no insult or room for complaining because this is what Samsung has been doing for the last few years. And of course the new Mega (S6+) will be out… Read more »

Dude the s3 is not getting updated because Samsung only update the 3 most current phones from that line for the s series that means that S6, S5 and S4 and for the note series that means Note 4, Note 3, Note 2 once the Note 5 come out the Note 2 won’t get updates anymore

okay leave lolipop update this time / lets talk about kitkat when kitkat released to s5 why Samsung not update stupid s3 you actually said three current phone from that series right so s5 and s4 and s3 should have kitkat running fine but this is not what you think of it / stupid galaxy s series cant even updated more than one major update but the powerful note 2 tells you different story remembered how easily Samsung put kitkat on it and they even confirmed it will get lollipop soon and s3 can not even compete with note 2… Read more »

That’s childish thinking. Samsung has had the same cadence for the last 4 years. S in the Spring, Note in the Fall. If you expected the Note 4 to be better than the S6, then you haven’t been paying attention. If you’re upset that Samsung releases better equipment/specs with each iteration then you don’t understand evolving technology.
