Exclusive: Next Galaxy S flagship to be called Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge variant coming too

Last updated: December 1st, 2014 at 18:09 UTC+02:00

Project Zero. Those are two important words for Samsung, as they present the company’s efforts to develop its next major Galaxy S flagship from scratch, in order to create something that can help it return to the incredible sales that flagships like the Galaxy S3 and S4 have seen. We’ve already given you exclusive info on Project Zero and the kind of upgrades it will bring to the table, and now we can confirm that the company’s next Galaxy S phone will be called the Galaxy S6.

That’s right – while Project Zero will see Samsung going back to the drawing board to develop the Galaxy S6 in order to make it stand out, it will not be experimenting with the naming strategy for the Galaxy S series. That’s not surprising, as the Galaxy S lineup is extremely popular the world over, and Samsung will be looking at continuing the series’ title with a simple step up to the next number as far as the naming is concerned.

We have also learned that similar to the Galaxy Note Edge, Samsung will be launching a variant of the Galaxy S6 with a curved display, called the Galaxy S6 Edge (the name could change in the coming months, but we don’t think there’s a high chance that will happen.) We don’t have more details, but we’re guessing the curved screen will be similar to that of the Galaxy Note Edge’s and will bend at one side of the phone.

It could also be something different, especially given Samsung has said it is focusing on curved displays to stay ahead of the competition. However, since curved displays are still in their infancy, expect to see Samsung release only limited units of the Galaxy S6 in select markets, but possibly in higher numbers than the Galaxy Note Edge.

As always, take everything with a pinch of salt as it is quite early in the Galaxy S6’s development, but rest assured we’re doing everything we can to get any more info we can on Samsung’s next big thing. To remind you, the Galaxy S6 should come with a Quad HD (2560×1440) display, 64-bit Exynos 7420/Snapdragon 810 processor, 16/20-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 32/64/128GB storage, and Broadcom’s new BCM4773 sensor chip.
