Galaxy S22 Ultra’s cameras are a shocking ‘downgrade’ vs the S21 Ultra

Although the Galaxy S22 Ultra promises to offer several improvements over the Galaxy S21 Ultra like an integrated S Pen silo, a side-by-side comparison of their spec sheets reveal two (nearly) identical smartphones. Interestingly enough, there are a few downgrades in the camera department as well.

Samsung has switched things up with the Galaxy S22 Ultra cameras

YouTuber Golden Reviewer noticed that the 3x and 10x telephoto lenses (both the 10MP sensors, essentially)  in the Galaxy S22 Ultra are marginally smaller than that of the Galaxy S21 Ultra.  Now, that doesn't necessarily mean degraded performance, because it is easy for Samsung to fill in the gaps with software magic.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra used a Samsung S5K3J1, which is 1/3.24 inches in size, has a focal length of 9.0mm for the 3x lens and 30.6mm for the 10x lens, and a pixel size of  1.22 microns. On the other hand, the Galaxy S22 uses a Sony IMX754 lens with a 1/3.52 inch sensor size, a focal length of 7.9mm for the 3x lens and 27.2mm for the 10x lens, and a pixel size of  1.12 microns.

For reasons unknown, Samsung has decided to use a smaller, Sony-made sensor on the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Does this mean that it is worse off than the Galaxy S21 Ultra? A recently leaked 100x zoom video tell us otherwise, but we'll reserve judgment until we get to review the device in depth.
