Rumors about Samsung killing a Galaxy S24 model are misleading

Samsung may have just confirmed the Unpacked event for the Galaxy S23 series today but the rumor mill is already moving on to next year's lineup. The latest suggests that Samsung is going to reduce the number of handsets in this series to two, killing off one of the models.

According to our information, that's not accurate. The rumor is misleading as it claims that Samsung will not offer the Plus model in the 2024 lineup. The company is only said to offer the base Galaxy S24 and the top-of-the-line Galaxy S24 Ultra models only.

Samsung isn't reducing models in the Galaxy S24 series

Poor sales of the Galaxy S22+ are claimed to be the reason behind this decision. This model reportedly accounted for only 17% of all Galaxy S22 shipments last year. The base and Ultra models accounted for 38% and 45% respectively, according to Gfk estimates.

It's been a few years since Samsung has been offering three models with every Galaxy S series. Each lineup has included the base, the Plus, and the Ultra variant. This will also be the case with the Galaxy S23 series that will be unveiled on February 1.

As per this rumor out of South Korea, Samsung is going to ditch the Galaxy S24+ and only release the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Ultra models. The claim substantiates that by pointing out that Samsung only has “DM1” and “DM3” projects in the pipeline, referring to the Galaxy S24 and the Ultra model respectively. “DM2” would have been the Galaxy S24+ but it's not included in the lineup.

This information is inaccurate. We understand that “DM” is the abbreviation for Diamond which is the internal codename for the Galaxy S23 series, not the Galaxy S24. The upcoming lineup has three models – the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra – and they're internally referred to as the DM1, DM2, and DM3.

That's not to say that the possibility of this happening doesn't exist. However, at this point in time, there's nothing to substantiate the rumor about Samsung ditching the Galaxy S24+.
