Amazon has announced that it will soon release an updated version of the Prime Video app for all its users. It will feature a redesigned UI aimed at “bringing clarity and simplicity back to streaming.” Prime Video has first-party content as well as content from other streaming apps, including BBC, Crunchyroll, Discovery+, Lionsgate Play, Max, MGM+, Paramount+, and Starz, which you have to pay for. The app surfaces content from all those apps, and you might end up clicking on a movie or TV show from a service you have not subscribed to. And it can waste your time.
With the upcoming redesign, the Prime Video app will have a dedicated tab named ‘Prime.' Clicking on that tab will only show content you can watch without paying or subscribing to anything else other than Prime Video. Next to that tab will be other tabs for services you have subscribed to. Moreover, the app will make it easier to explore, sign up, and manage your subscriptions. In the US, there are over 100 add-on streaming subscriptions.
While the home screen will still show content from Prime Video and other content partners, the poster for that content will have the logo of its respective streaming service. This design feature instantly helps you understand whether or not you can watch it without paying for anything extra.
The story continues after the video…
As with all things in 2024, the redesigned Prime Video app will have some sort of AI to offer personalized content recommendations for each profile. It will create a short list of things (Made For You lists in ‘Movies' and ‘TV Shows' tabs) you may enjoy based on your watching history. Short summaries about movies and TV shows are also created using Generative AI large language models (LLMs).
As usual, you can just use the regular Top 10 lists of content popular among streamers in your region. There will also be Live TV channels if you can't decide what to watch next. The app will also have smoother animations, transitions, and zoom effects to improve your overall experience.
Besides Samsung (and other branded) TVs, Amazon might also release a redesigned version of its app for smartphones and tablets, but there is no clarity on that yet.
