One UI (Android Pie) feature focus: Reset volume and screen brightness

Have you ever gone into the display settings of your Galaxy smartphone to temporarily increase the screen timeout duration, only to forget resetting it back to normal? Increased screen brightness for a particular situation and left it there, allowing the display to use up precious battery life? Or wished the phone’s speakers would stop blasting out at full volume in a crowded place or late in the night? If the answer is yes, then you will like a new feature in Android Pie and One UI.

An option called Optimize settings can be found in advanced battery settings on Pie. When enabled, it can automatically reset screen brightness, screen timeout duration, and media volume to a customizable preset value. The adjustment is made at midnight each day if you’re not using the phone at the time, and you can also individually control which of the three settings are automatically reset. It’s a simple yet clever feature that only Samsung can think of with its kitchen sink approach to smartphone functionality.

Using the Android Pie beta? To find the Optimize settings option, open the phone’s Settings app, tap Device care, then tap the Battery option to go into the battery menu. Here, tap the three-dot button at the top right of the screen and click on the Settings option.

I think they should add the screen resolution and the high performance mode that I forget to turn off too. Also won’t adaptive brightness save the battery in advance.

Before you abhijeet get all excited about one ui pie, what is happening to all the promised ar emojis updates that were to be available on the Note 9 late 2018. There have been No new pre done charterers, faces, hair styles, skin colors etc.. Last thing that was added was Disney Frozen back in Sept? FAKE NEWS? Please advise and make sure you are responding to your readers.

Maybe they realised that AR emojis should just be removed (I agree with you about the fact that promises are promises though)

Biransahin

Definitely agree. The only one who uses it is my 7 year old niece who plays with it on my wife’s S9 plus! It’s a gimmick for children. Do any adults actually use that thing?

how can things like reset screen brightness, screen timeout duration, and media volume save battery during the night when Im not using the phone? 😀 what a nonsense?

Biransahin

Because it stops the background processes that stay running to allow them to run on demand. You’re not exactly the brightest star in the heavens, are you? 😉

The only thing that stops background processes is Doze. This has nothing to do with background processes enery consumption. @Biransahin you don’t even know what respect is, wikipedia is free

Actually you are wrong and Mr. Biran is correct. Though I am an opticıan and not a complete expert I have designed some very small apps for vision measurement in our practice for using with customers to choose glasses frames. Background processes was part of the Linux/Android course I did. Anything that restricts a normal process such as auto brightness and volume does indeed save battery. It was the number one lesson of our programming course to save battery for the user. With all due respect to the fırst commentor , anyone who makes a comment without knowledge should be… Read more »

It’s good to see you doing some programming Gunter! I have a number of years designing in house engineering calculations apps for our engineering consultancy business so if you ever need tips let me know! I know the courses usually cover the basic rules. I am impressed that you learned about background processes. You know sometimes I forget that people don’t have the knowledge and my reply can be non pc. So, fcarroll and pepo187 I apologise to anyone who might have been offended. Jt just gets to me sometimes when people say things without any knowledge of the subject.… Read more »

Thank you Mr. Bıran. It would be very nice to have some tips for you. I want to have something to do a math calculation automatically for lens centering that I can use with a mobıile phone camera. Maybe you can help. Do you have an email?

Biransahin
Biransahin

Of course! It would be a pleasure to help you. Math based apps are my strength! I don’t think I can post my email here, but possibly Sammobile can pass it on to you. 👍

Gunter, did you design a fluid pumping system for dentistry disinfection? I found it on an engineering database with your first name. I won’t say the last name. If you did I think I found you. If its you, say so amd I’ll email the address on the site. Sorry I should say I saw that you are a dentist on the site so I was thinking it was you.

Yes indeed!! It is a small world. That is you! If you have email with a pump mentioned in it!! I You did this as a college projekt a few years ago. I look forward to hearing from you!

You have ındeed found me. It is me! You are like a detective. Please write and I will send you my questions. Maybe we can collaborate on something. This proves how valuable that Sammobıle is. Thank you guys!!!

Abhijeet is correct in his article. It stops all background processes relating to these operations. You should learn a little bit about how Android works before saying such silly things mein freund!

Where is it written in article that it stops process ?

That’s a fantastic addition. Love it. There are free apps for this but they’re data mining your information. This is better.

“Have you ever gone into the display settings of your Galaxy smartphone to temporarily increase the screen timeout duration, only to forget resetting it back to normal?”

No.
Because I have Caffeinate installed which is an app that allows you to add a shortcut to the notification tray that you can press to pit a timer on the screen that will prevent it from timing out. You can also set how long you want the screen to remain awake from that shortcut. And you don’t need Pie for it. Thought someone might want to know about it 😉

Biransahin
Biransahin

Well now you won’t need a superfluous app. You will have it on your phone already. Plus caffeinate uses Firebase which collects and uses phone data to target ads. Nothing is for free.

Except it works better than being buried in the settings and forcing you to leave whatever you’re doing to access it.

As for Firebase…dude, you’re using a phone with GOOGLE’s Android. You use a Google account. If you’re concerned with data collection for ad-targeting, you’re using the wrong operating system.

Gunter2
Gunter2

You are wrong my friend. Free apps like Caffeine work in a different way. Google can profile you for advertising. That is true. However Firebase is SELLING your personal data to third party companies. There is an enormous difference. If you remember Cambridge Analytics that got Facebook in big trouble? Firebase is the same thing.
