Samsung SDS (part of the Samsung Group) is joining firms like Google, Microsoft, VISA and PayPal with its association with FIDO, and will lend a hand in developing standardized specifications for authentication technologies, including fingerprint scanners, NFC, and iris and voice recognition. Various patent applications and rumors have hinted at Samsung working on an iris recognition system for smartphones and tablets, and the alliance with FIDO is a good indication of the company's plans to go all-in in the attempt to make things more secure for end-users.
Samsung will be partnering with KG Mobilians and KG Inicis, a mobile transaction and credit card payment firm respectively, to launch a basic payment service using fingerprint authentication in April. Samsung's in-house biometric solution is the second in the world to be certified by FIDO, though it remains to be seen if this service is the same as Samsung Pay or something different.
