Samsung to supply massive OLED panel for Huawei’s next flagship device

It's common for flagship smartphones to have displays of over 6-inches but the panels have not yet reached the 7-inch mark which would essentially push them into the tablet territory. However, if a report out of South Korea is to be believed, Samsung Display is preparing 6.9-inch OLED panels for Huawei which the Chinese manufacturer will use its next flagship smartphone. As far as smartphones are concerned, this will indeed be a massive panel in its own right.

The report claims that this panel will almost be 7-inches and that will be far greater than any other smartphone on the market today. Huawei is expected to use the AMOLED panel for its next flagship device, the Huawei Mate 20, which is likely going to be released in the second half of this year.

Pushing smartphones into tablet territory

Samsung Display's curved panels have become quite popular. Oppo, another Chinese brand, is reportedly sourcing curved panels from Samsung for its next flagship as well. However, Huawei is said to have placed orders for flat OLED panels, not curved.

The technical specifications of this display haven't been revealed by the report which only points out that this device will then have the biggest smartphone display on the market. Samsung is expected to push the boundary with the Galaxy Note 9 in August this year as the handset will likely feature its biggest-ever smartphone display of 6.38-inches. Even Apple's next iPhone is said to hit 6.46-inch in this department.

Huawei's decision to opt for a massive panel for its next smartphone is likely driven by its desire to remain the top vendor in its home market of China. The users there tend to prefer larger displays possibly due to the fact that Chinese characters occupy a larger text area on the display.

Samsung Display is reportedly going to begin full-fledged supply of these 7-inch flat OLED panels to Huawei by the end of the third quarter of this year.
