Don’t expect a macro camera upgrade on the Galaxy A55

The Galaxy A55 will come with a 5MP macro camera, according to our friends over at GalaxyClub. Samsung's mid-range phones have a lot in common with its flagships these days, such as high refresh rate displays, stereo speakers, water-resistant designs sandwiched between two slabs of glass, and four years of major OS upgrades.

But as far as camera hardware is concerned, the divide between Samsung's flagship and mid-range phones is still pretty wide. While the primary cameras on mid-range Galaxy smartphones are good enough for photos in all but the toughest lighting conditions and support features like optical image stabilization, the tertiary cameras remain as unimpressive as ever.

The upcoming Galaxy A55, which will be Samsung's premier mid-range phone for 2024, will suffer the same fate. Previous rumors revealed that the Galaxy A55 will have 50MP main, 12MP ultra-wide, and 32MP front cameras like the Galaxy A54, and we had assumed the macro camera wouldn't be getting an upgrade either.

Camera upgrades are not going to be a thing on the Galaxy A55

It appears our assumption was correct. The A55 will have a 5MP macro camera, which means that macro photography will continue to be a low-quality affair on mid-range Galaxy phones. In fact, the only reason we can see for the macro camera's existence at this point is that it helps Samsung pad the number of cameras on the spec sheet, especially now that the company seems to have ditched the depth sensor that was a part of most of its mid-range and budget phones for half a decade.

The design and device performance will get the biggest upgrades with the Galaxy A55. The A54 was the first phone in the lineup to feature a glass back, and Samsung is now replacing the plastic frame with one made of metal. The A55 will also come with a new Exynos chipset — the Exynos 1480 — that is Samsung's first mid-range chip with an AMD-powered GPU.

Although the new Galaxy A55 from Samsung seems to be wiping the floor with the older Galaxy A54 in the display department, the same cannot be said about the cameras. According to independent reviewer DxOMark, the Galaxy 54 and A55 camera systems perform almost the same. These results aren't all that surprising, seeing how the […]
