The popularity of foldable smartphones is rising thanks to Samsung's efforts this year. Foldable phones do well enough to take up 8.9% of the smartphone market, but market watchers estimate these types of devices to gain more traction next year. Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 in 2022, and other OEMs like Oppo, Xiaomi, and Huawei are releasing new foldable phones of their own.

Counterpoint Research (via Business Korea) estimates that Samsung will lose a small portion of its foldable market share to its rivals next year. Samsung should close this year with an 85% foldable phone market share, but that percentage could drop to 74% in 2022.

Market watchers estimate that foldable phones should cover 16.9% of the global smartphone market in 2022, up from 8.9% this year. Therefore, Samsung's market share may drop in 2022, but even so, its shipments should be higher.

Samsung maintains its focus on the foldable device segment

Earlier this year, UBI Research forecast that Samsung Display will manufacture roughly 18 million foldable OLED panels next year in anticipation of higher demand and more shipments worldwide.

Back in October, Samsung said on record that it's looking forward to helping the foldable market grow even more in 2022. The company claims it has succeeded in kickstarting and popularizing foldable phone technology. It expects a significant increase in foldable phone sales next year.
