Qualcomm's breakthrough 12-core processor could come to Samsung laptops

During the Snapdragon Summit that was held last month, Qualcomm unveiled its Oryon processor branding. It's a new lineup of Qualcomm processors made for more powerful devices like desktop PCs and laptops. Now, WinFuture has revealed more details about the first chipset in the lineup. It is reportedly codenamed ‘Hamoa' and has twelve CPU cores. Eight of those cores are tuned for high performance, while four are efficiency cores.

Qualcomm is reportedly testing two versions of this chipset with model numbers SC8380X and SC8380XP. Going by the model number, these are successors to the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 chipset with model number SC8280. The chipset is reportedly based on CPU cores designed by Nuvia, which Qualcomm acquired in early 2021. It also features the Snapdragon X65 5G modem that offers up to 10Gbps download speeds and UFS 4.0 storage.

The chipset is reportedly built using TSMC's 3nm process, which means it will have excellent performance and power efficiency. We could finally be looking at MacBook Air-like 20+ hours of battery life on Windows laptops. Looking at Samsung's track record, the company could release a laptop based on this Oryon processor sometime toward the end of next year.
