Samsung has released the Android Pie update for yet another Galaxy J series phone. The Galaxy J7 Duo was launched in very few markets and was unique for being the first Galaxy J series phone with a processor that had high-performance cores – it is powered by the Exynos 7884 SoC, an underclocked version of the Exynos 7885 that debuted on the Galaxy A8 (2018). And today, the software on the device is making the jump to the newest official version of Android.

The update is currently out in India, which was the first market where the J7 Duo was launched. It's a 1270 MB download over the air and brings Samsung's new One UI (version 1.1) interface. As with other non-flagship Galaxy smartphones, not every Android Pie and One UI feature has made the cut for the Galaxy J7 Duo. In fact, there's very little to be had in terms of the big features. Other than Night mode and Android Pie's Digital Wellbeing, it's all mostly minor new functionality, many of which have been detailed in our One UI (Android Pie) feature focus series of articles.

The update includes the July 2019 security patch and carries software version J720FDDU4BSG7. It can be downloaded on the phone by tapping the Download updates manually option in the Settings » Software update menu. Samsung's Smart Switch software can be used to upgrade as well as long as you are using Windows or macOS, and we'll also have the Android Pie firmware up in our firmware database shortly.

The Galaxy experience can be messy for first-time users

Some say it's always better to have more options, but it's never as clear-cut as it sounds. This design philosophy doesn't always work, and more importantly, it isn't a magical shortcut that can patch everything up and always lead to a better user experience.
