With no new Galaxy Note, 2022’s second half is going to be boring for Samsung fans

It's been a long-time tradition: Samsung has launched a new Galaxy S flagship at the beginning of the year and a new Note flagship in the second half of a year for almost a decade. It was only last year that Samsung finally stopped doing so. The Galaxy Note line has now been merged into the Galaxy S line, while the second half of the year is now dedicated to Samsung's foldable phones.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are coming in the second half of 2022, that much is as sure as water is wet (plus Samsung has already revealed it will launch new foldables later this year). And I've just realized that this means the rest of 2022 is going to be pretty boring for a lot of Samsung fans, me being one of them.

The launch of a new Galaxy Note smartphone has always been exciting, primarily because Samsung has often fixed some of the problems with the Galaxy S series from that year with each new Note. But this time, we're going to get two new foldables instead, none of which are likely to be as perfectly high-end as a Galaxy Note would have been.

No new Note means not as much excitement for many of us Samsung fans

For example, it doesn't seem like Samsung is going to be able to put the S Pen inside the Galaxy Z Fold 4, and the Z Fold 4's camera system is not going to be as high-specced as you would get from a, say, Galaxy Note 22 Ultra. Yes, I know the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the Note 22 Ultra in all but name and we can just buy that, but that doesn't mean the lack of an actual Note 22 Ultra won't be disappointing for many of us.

Not that Samsung cares, though: It seems the company's foldables are doing great, and things can only get better from here (even though the competition isn't sitting still). But at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I have to say I would have loved to see a proper Galaxy Note once again. I'm sure the Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 will be great in many ways, but as someone who's not ready to hop on the foldable hype train just yet, well, they don't have me all that excited.

The Galaxy Z Fold series, post-Fold 3, is uniquely positioned regarding the S Pen. These foldable phones treat the S Pen unlike the Note and Galaxy S Ultra lineups.
