TL;DR

  • Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra are expected to get Samsung Display’s M16 OLED panels, the first Galaxy S display material upgrade in three years.
  • The M16 panels should bring higher brightness, better efficiency, improved color accuracy, and longer lifespan, plus COE and Privacy Display tech.
  • The standard Galaxy S27 and S27+ are said to use M14 panels, while Galaxy Z Flip 9 and Fold 9 models may also move to M16 later in 2027.

Samsung is making big changes to the Galaxy S series next year. The company is expected to launch four Galaxy S27 series phones early in the year, and two of those models—the Galaxy S27 Pro and the Galaxy S27 Ultra—will reportedly receive the biggest OLED display upgrade in three years.

All Galaxy S27 series phones will use newer OLED panels

A report from ETNews claims the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra will feature Samsung Display's M16 OLED panels. This marks the first time in three years that Samsung's MX (mobile) division is upgrading to a new OLED material for its Galaxy S devices. Both phones will utilize panels with Color Filter-on-Encapsulation (COE) and Privacy Display technology.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ will reportedly use M14 OLED material, an upgrade from the M13 material featured in the Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26+.

M16 is Samsung Display's most advanced OLED material yet, offering higher peak brightness, improved power efficiency, better color accuracy, and a longer lifespan. It is already utilized in the recently launched iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, as well as Google's Pixel 11 and Vivo's iQOO 16.

Size-wise, the Galaxy S27 is said to sport a 6.27-inch screen, while the Galaxy S27+ will have a 6.66-inch display. The Galaxy S27 Pro, at 6.47 inches, features a smaller footprint than the Galaxy S27 Ultra's 6.89-inch panel.

Galaxy Z Flip 9 and Z Fold 9 series will also use M16 OLED panel

Looking further ahead, the Galaxy Z Flip 9, Galaxy Z Fold 9, and Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra are also expected to upgrade to M16 OLED panels when they launch in the second half of 2027. In comparison, the current Galaxy Z Flip 8, Z Fold 8, and Z Fold 8 Ultra rely on M13 OLED panels.
