Samsung to develop Google’s 3nm Pixel 8 Tensor chip at its factory

In June this year, Samsung started producing the world's first 3nm chips, and it started shipping the first batch by July. Now, the latest news coming in suggests that Google's 3nm mobile chips will be produced by Samsung at its 3nm foundry lines. These 3nm chips will be used by Google in the next-generation Pixel 8 series.

Notably, as per BusinessKorea, the U.S. tech giant will be producing the 3nm chips in conjunction with Korean smartphone giant, Samsung. This third-generation Tensor chipset will be developed by Samsung Electronics' System LSI Division. This 3nm chip will be housed inside the Pixel 8, which is scheduled to come out in the second half of next year.

Google has already been working with Samsung on chipsets

The first Tensor chip was developed by Google last year and was introduced with the Google Pixel 6 series smartphones in 2021. Prior to that, Google was using Qualcomm's chipset on its Pixel lineup, but it was succeeded by the Tensor chipset developed with support from Samsung Electronics.

As of now, the Tensor chipset will only be produced for mobile phones. The idea of using its own chip is to bask in the global mobile OS market share, where Google can optimize its smartphones for better performance and bring in exclusive features and create an integrated ecosystem, just like Apple. Google's collaboration with Samsung, the world's first 3nm chipset maker, also sharpens its competitiveness in the global semiconductor business.
