While Samsung has been selling millions of foldable smartphones globally, there are a few aspects in which rival phones from Chinese brands are simply better. Some of the foldable phones from Chinese brands are slimmer and have displays that don't have a visible crease. And Samsung was rumored to bring similar improvements with its future Galaxy Z series phones. Now, more information about those aspects has been revealed.

According to a new report from South Korea's ETNews, Samsung has aimed to bring down the weight of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to 250g, which is 13g lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Moreover, the company's upcoming flagship foldable smartphone is reportedly 13.4mm thin when folded, which is 0.8mm thinner than the 14.2mm Galaxy Z Fold 4. While Samsung hasn't achieved these numbers yet, it is trying hard to achieve its goals before that release later this year. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 prototype currently under testing weighs 254g.

    Galaxy Z Fold 5 may not have a built-in S Pen slot

Apart from thickness and weight improvements, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will reportedly feature a newly developed hinge that folds the inner OLED display in a waterdrop shape. This reduces the visibility of the crease usually seen in foldable smartphones. Moreover, when this new hinge is used, both halves of the phone are folded shut without any gap. Samsung's previous-generation Galaxy Z series phones have a small gap towards the hinge when folded.

According to previous reports, Samsung's new waterdrop-shaped hinge also allows for a foldable phone design that can achieve an IPX8 rating for water resistance. In comparison, most Chinese phone brands haven't been able to offer an IPX8 rating on their foldable smartphones.

To make its foldable phones thinner, the South Korean firm has decided not to include an S Pen slot inside the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The report also claims that Samsung sold 10 million foldable smartphones last year, and this year, the company is aiming to improve sales of Galaxy Z series phones by 10%.
