Last week we were left wondering whether Samsung's upcoming Exynos 2200 chipset equipped with AMD graphics will debut along with a smartphone or a new laptop, but it could be both. Samsung is reportedly developing two versions of the Exynos 2200 SoC: one for the Android mobile scene and the other for the laptop segment. Presumably, the chips will share a similar architecture but each will be tuned for their respective segments and form factors.

Exact specifications pertaining to the Exynos 2200 chipset are unknown but the source — @TheGalox_ — claims that early tests are very promising. Not only is the Exynos 2200 faster than the existing Exynos 2100 solution, but it also supposedly outperforms the Apple A14 chipset by a great margin.

The Exynos 2200 SoC might give the Apple A14 a run for its money

The two Exynos 2200 solutions will perform at slightly different levels. Laptops are not as compact as smartphones, which means that their chipsets can usually benefit from better cooling and improved performance. According to the source, the Exynos 2200 solution designed for laptops will be roughly 20% faster than the mobile version.

Meanwhile, the Exynos 2200 SoC for mobile is already shaping up to be a powerful sequel to the Exynos 2100 and a strong rival to the Apple A14 solution. The source claims that the Exynos 2200 for mobile will deliver 25% better CPU performance and 2.5x faster graphics compared to the Exynos 2100. Furthermore, the chipset could double the performance of the Apple A14 in terms of graphics.

Of course, Apple is likely developing its own next-gen SoC designed to outperform the A14, so it remains to be seen how the Exynos 2200 SoC will fare against the A14 sequel later this year. It will be Samsung's first chipset to employ AMD graphics and a lot of fans of the brand are placing great hope in this development.
