Rumor has it that the Galaxy S8 will feature a 2K display and no home button

Now that the Galaxy Note 7 has been discontinued officially, all eyes will be on Samsung’s next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8. The South Korean smartphone giant recently shared some possible features that could be introduced with the Galaxy S8 such as an intelligent digital assistant (codenamed Bixby), a “slick design“, and an improved camera. Earlier reports also stated that the smartphone would come with a 4K display for improved VR experience, but a new rumor contradicts the report.

According to a new rumor, the Galaxy S8 will continue using a QHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) Super AMOLED display. The rumor also states that no component vendor has so far received orders for parts that would be used for a home button, so there is a possibility that the Galaxy S8 could have an all-glass front with either an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor from Qualcomm or an optical fingerprint sensor underneath it. There are already a few phones such as the Xiaomi Mi 5s and the Le Max Pro that are using Qualcomm’s ultrasonic SenseID fingerprint reading technology.

As with all rumors, you should take this information with a pinch of salt. Apple has ditched the physical home button for a capacitive one with the iPhone 7 this year. Do you think its time for Samsung to ditch its iconic home button as well?

And that’s the end of Samsung. Oh well, at least I have their legendary (and last real flagship) Note 7. Not having the home button is an utter fail. And still no 4K display? Uber lame.

Stupid comment. There’s bound to be one.

Is 4K really needed for VR? How about the increased battery drain? And it’s just a rumor at this point in time.

Also return your note 7 before it hurts somebody..

I think the S8 might upscale to 4K when it is inserted into a Gear VR, and I think the home button could remain, the camera launch is both convenient and useful. if they do ditch it. Please keep the back button on the right and recents on the left. we’re too used to it now. lol

It will be nice to have a 4k display for VR given how popular the Gear VR is, but it’s not a deal breaker. Home button doesn’t bother me either way and I don’t mind losing it for a better design.

I can’t see a reason for 4k display, only for VR, and how many customer will use their vr with a S8? I rather have a 2k display with 1 day battery usage, than a 4k display with half day battery usage.

I think 2k is something that will remain for a long time. There is no need for a 4k display for now, you can’t tell the difference between 2k and 4k side by side. Some people says that 1080p is enought for a regular user, but I see difference using the 2k display and It’s important to have I higher resolution in case you use the Gear VR, that would be the only excuse to a smartphone from Samsung have a 4k resolution. About the home button I don’t think that Samsung will remove it, at least not in 2017… Read more »

Yes I think it is time to ditch it! Although I don’t like nav bars taking up screen real estate, I think they perform faster than capacitive and definitely home buttons.
