    Introduction

Seeing how well the Galaxy S6 edge ended up performing, it became clear to Samsung that customers were willing to spend a premium in order to purchase the dual-edge curved variant of its flagship smartphone. So it doubled down on that strategy for the Galaxy S7 edge.

The Galaxy S7 edge made a number of improvements to its predecessor. It came with a larger display, a bigger battery, a microSD card slot in addition to a more powerful processor. The return of IP68 water and dust resistance was also welcomed by the Samsung faithful.

    Design

The Galaxy S7 edge has the same metal and glass unibody construction that we first saw on the Galaxy S6 edge. This meant that the device looked and felt every bit as premium as its price tag. The curved edges of the display coupled with the curved back make it a joy to hold in the hand.

Now that the IP68 rating was back, users could once again rest assured that their device could withstand a dip in the pool. The Galaxy S7 edge was able to withstand being submerged in up to five feet of water for up to 30 minutes. The handset measured 150.9 x 72.6 x 7.7 mm and weighed 157g.

    Specifications

A 2.3GHz Exynos 8890 processor powered the Galaxy S7 edge with the Snapdragon 820 variant being released in certain markets like the United States and China. According to Samsung, the new chipset delivered a 30 and 60 percent gain in CPU and GPU performance respectively.

Other specs include a Mali-T880 MP12 GPU, LTE Cat 9 modem with download speeds of up to 450Mbps, 4GB of RAM with 32/64/128GB storage configurations. A non-removable 3,600mAh battery was also onboard with support for wireless charging.

    Display

The Galaxy S7 edge came with an excellent 5.5-inch Quad HD+ (2560×1440) pixel resolution Super AMOLED dual-edge curved display. It got nice and bright with great color reproduction and viewing angles.

The display's curved edges looked aesthetically pleasing, with Samsung updating the Edge interface with more features like a compass and weather panel.

    Camera

The Galaxy S7 edge features a 12-megapixel f/1.7 rear camera with an LED flash. This was actually the world's first Dual Pixel sensor on a smartphone. Dual Pixel allowed for better and faster autofocus.

The individual pixel size was also increased to 1.4 microns and when combined with the f/1.7 aperture, it allowed the Galaxy S7 edge to improve its low-light photography performance. A 5-megapixel f/1.7 camera was present for video calls and selfies.

    Software

The Galaxy S7 edge came with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and it was accustomed by the latest iteration of Samsung's custom Android skin, which the company had stopped calling TouchWiz by that point in time.

Of the many new features included, there were new camera features as well. Features like Motion Photo and Hyperlapse where first introduced to Samsung's flagship lineup with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

    Release date and price

The Galaxy S7 edge went on sale worldwide on March 11, 2016 in black, gold, white, silver, pink and blue. Prices started at $769 for the unlocked variant.
