Introduction
The Galaxy M02s was the first smartphone to be officially unveiled by Samsung in 2021. It's a budget phone that promises a generous display, good battery life, and decent specs for the price.
It is essentially a Galaxy M-branded phone so it is expected to check those boxes. The phone's official announcement was accompanied by the tag line Get Ready To Max Up because of this. Indeed, the Galaxy M02s brings with it a handful of improvements compared to the Galaxy M01s, from display to camera and internal hardware.
Design
Samsung's new Galaxy M02s might boast a variety of upgrades over its predecessor but as far as the exterior design goes, it can be easily mistaken with the Galaxy M01s from the front. This is due to similarly-sized bezels and the Infinity-V display.
The back panel is what gives the Galaxy M02s a different identity. It has a prismatic color pattern and a rectangular camera cutout.
The Galaxy M02s was introduced in three color options: black, blue, and red. It has a unibody design, meaning the back panel wraps around the edges of the phone without a metal frame being in the way.
Specifications
Samsung is powering the Galaxy M02s with the Snapdragon 450 chipset supplied by Qualcomm. The SoC was built on a 14nm LPP process and it features eight ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores with a 1.8GHz clock speed.
Memory-wise the phone is equipped with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of built-in storage and a microSD card slot. Other specs include a USB-C port, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, and a standard 3.5mm audio port. All these components rely on a 5,000mAh battery with support for 15W fast charging.
Display
Samsung has switched from a PLS IPS display to TFT LCD technology with the Galaxy M02s. The panel has a 6.5-inch diagonal and an HD+ resolution.
The display runs at the usual 60Hz, which is totally expected given the price range. The display follows Samsung's Infinity-V design language and has a fairly thick lower bezel.
Camera
The back of the Galaxy M02s accommodates three sensors and an LED flash. The triple-camera setup consists of a 13MP primary shooter, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro shooter.
The Infinity-V display notch holds a 5MP selfie sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. None of these cameras break any new ground but they get the job done.
Software
Even though the Galaxy M02s was unveiled in the first week of 2021, the phone doesn't come with the latest version of Android out of the box. It runs on a version of One UI that's based on Android 10 as opposed to Android 11.
Price and Availability
The Galaxy M02s was scheduled for release in India on January 7, 2021. Meanwhile, Samsung Nepal was first to confirm the phone's price of NPR 15,999, or the rough equivalent of $137.
