Apple unveiled a new series of iPads yesterday, including new iPad Air and Pro models. It was a pretty exciting event for Apple fans because, for the first time, the company employs OLED display technology for its new iPad Pros.

As Apple's Pro slates have officially transitioned to OLED, Samsung is no longer the only reasonable go-to brand for OLED tablets. But interestingly enough, the iPad Pros don't use just any OLED tech. Apple's display is a different beast.

With the help of Korean display manufacturers, including Samsung Display and LG Display, Apple has created a new type of OLED for its latest iPad Pro tablets. Apple calls it Tandem OLED, and it is very impressive.

Samsung, LG, and Apple have pushed OLED to new heights

The new Tandem OLED display used by the latest iPad Pro tablets shines brighter than conventional OLED. A single OLED panel wasn't bright enough for the iPad Pros, so by leveraging the manufacturing expertise of Samsung and LG Display, Apple created a two-stack design called Tandem OLED.

Apple's new OLED technology consists of two panels sandwiched together, allowing the display to reach a higher brightness level than usual. For context, the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, which has a traditional single-layer OLED display, peaks at roughly 900 nits of brightness. In contrast, Apple says the new iPad Pros with Tandem OLED can reach 1,600 nits.

    Story continues after the video…

Although this clever technology was made possible with help from Korean display manufacturers, Apple took credit for its design and coined the “Tandem OLED” name. Whether this type of dual-stack technology will be used by Samsung Electronics for its Galaxy Tab S series remains to be seen. But if it will, Samsung likely won't call it Tandem OLED.

The Korean tech giant may unveil a new Galaxy Tab S lineup later this year. The tentatively named Galaxy Tab S10 showed signs of existence two months ago when its battery showed up online, but not much else is known. Samsung could release the Tab S9 sequels later this year.
