Gear S3 update in Canada addresses battery life issue

The long-awaited Tizen 3.0 update was delivered about a month ago, and with much excitement Gear S3 users could not wait to download it and check out the new features, the new look, etc. At first glance, everything seemed to be peachy until users took a look at their battery percentage and noticed quite a bit of change. Some Gear S3 owners complained about the battery life draining at an unusual pace, causing them to question whether the update was worth the significant battery issue that succeeded it.

Gear S3 update in Canada

Good news, Canadians! You need not worry because an update is coming your way that will address this issue and hopefully, resolve it, and return the 2-3 day battery life you were accustomed to. No word yet as to when other markets will be receiving the update, but it seems Canada is first in line.

The Tizen 3.0 value pack update brings updated, more intuitive widgets that now provide more information, improved bezel ring function, in addition to an improvement with fitness tracking for all of you health and fitness fanatics.

The latest firmware update for the Gear S3 is rolling out now. It weighs in at 20MB. Don’t expect much in the way of new features as it only fixes the battery bug.

Thanks, J T!

Just received an update to Gear Manager too – not sure if it is related in any way to the battery drain issues/other bugs post-Tizen 3.0. If it helps those who might still be having battery issues, my battery drain is 2 – 2.5% / hour, which I consider normal.

Got the update here in Southern California for the S3 Classic (non-carrier) yesterday… as of now, NO change in battery drain. I took the watch off the charger at 12:30pm today, it’s now 2:27pm and it’s already at 78%. I used to go 12 hours and only be at 73% with always-on activated. Now I have to turn always-on off to make it through the day. Pretty terrible. Wish I never had installed 3.0 honestly. I have reset the watch (twice) since installing 3.0 including resetting the Gear app on the phone and making sure not to update the weather… Read more »

Try doing a master reset via Recovery mode using the hardware keys. Here are the steps (remember, this is also a factory reset, so it will wipe all your apps, data etc. from the watch; mine is backed up via Gear Manager so I can restore it after resetting): Back up data and settings etc. using Gear Manager. Turn the Gear S3 off. Press and hold the Power key until REBOOTING displays at the bottom of the screen (not just the first Gear S3 splash; keep holding it until it says β€˜rebooting…’ underneath). Press the Power key repeatedly until the… Read more »

I will give that a try later this evening! Thanks! I’m also chatting with Samsung about it as well via facebook. They asked me yesterday to give it another 24 hours, but I’m still getting the horrible battery drain.

OK, good luck! If that doesn’t work, note that some have reported certain watch faces might be causing the drain – check your battery usage in Gear Manager, and if there is excessive drain due to the watch face (or another app) try uninstalling them until you isolate the cause.

I’m actually using the stock ‘Gear Dashboard’ watch face. Brightness set to 3, auto low brightness turned on and screen timeout to 15 seconds.

UPDATE via Samsung – So after talking to a higher level support, he said he was taking all the info I gave him and giving it to the devs directly since the newest update didn’t help my watch. So that’s some good news.

Since the Tizen 3.0 update in Turkey I have had no battery issues, still getting 3 days though I did reset the watch after the update..

I believe it is customary to acknowledge your sources, but that’s OK, I’m not hurt or anything…haha! πŸ˜‰

So far, the battery life seems dramatically improved, but will update after a cycle or two. Also looking forward to seeing if it resolves the charging bug (my Gear S3 wouldn’t cycle properly, with the charger frequently signalling a dock error, flashing red, and stopping charging – very annoying).

Sorry about that! Landon’s new to our team and is still learning the tricks. Updated!

No worries Abhijeet, always happy to help, and welcome Landon!

This latest update hasn’t solved the charging issue BTW – if anyone has any insights into what might be causing that I would be grateful to hear them…

Maybe carrier [LTE] models will get an update in the next few months…
I’d prefer for them to get it right before I update.

Try updating manually through the Samsung Gear app? That could work … maybe.
