Apple is working on rival to Samsung’s AR glasses

On the day of the last Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung’s TM Roh, revealed that Google and Samsung are developing AR glasses. It will arrive as a direct competitor to Meta’s Orion and Apple’s upcoming AR glasses. While Roh didn’t reveal any details about the product, we have some new information about its competitor from the Cupertino-based tech giant.

According to Mark Gurman on Bloomberg, Apple is developing a version of the visionOS, the operating system that the Vision Pro uses, for smart glasses. That, in our opinion, is a great approach as it might offer a unified user interface across all XR devices from the company. It might also make apps made for visionOS work with the company’s AR glasses.

Check out our hands-on video of the Galaxy S25 Ultra below.

Google’s and Samsung’s upcoming smart glasses will most likely use Android XR as Google hasn’t made the OS just for MR headsets, such as Project Moohan, but also for smart glasses and XR devices in general. That was a great move by Google as it will save the company from spending tons of money on developing a separate OS for AR glasses, unlike Apple, which has to do exactly that.

We think Google was smarter than Apple when it came to developing software for XR devices. That being said, what matters is, how the end product turns out to be. While Roh hasn’t provided a timeline for the launch of Samsung’s AR glasses, he said that the company will launch it as soon as possible. Whereas, those from Apple, leaks claim, are at least two to three years away.
