Samsung and Apple could soon compete in another market segment besides smartphones, tablets, and smart wearables. Apple is showing signs of entering the VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) market, and the launch of its first VR/AR device could be around the corner.

Early evidence suggests that Apple chose the “RealityOS” name for the operating system powering its in-development VR/AR headset. The name is present in bits of Apple code and was recently trademarked by what appears to be a ghost company bearing the “Realityo Systems LLC” name. (via The Verge)

Apple is a very secretive company, and it is usual for large corporations such as Apple to use ghost companies to keep certain assets or IPs under wraps.

Regardless of these technicalities, the “RealityOS” brand just got trademarked in relationship to a “wearable computer” described by keywords such as: hardware, software, peripherals, and video games.

Samsung could also return to the VR/AR market soon

Samsung no longer sells Odyssey and Gear VR headsets, and it seemingly gave up on its VR / AR hardware ambitions after a few years of experimenting with the concept. However, the company could make a comeback.

The Korean tech giant appears to be working on a new extended reality headset. Samsung Electronics CEO Han Jong-hee hinted at MWC 2022 about the possibility that the company could be making a new extended reality headset for the Metaverse. And that “it won't take too long” before the public experiences this creation.

It's not clear if this Metaverse device will be a head-mounted display, a pair of smart glasses, or something else. But Samsung said it is “striving for perfection as we gear up for the launch.”

Perhaps Samsung's and Apple's plans coincide, and both companies are developing new extended reality headsets to be released soon. We'll keep you posted.
