Samsung still leads Indian market but is 'losing its grip'

Last week a report from research firm Canalys claimed that in Q4 2014 Micromax had dethroned Samsung to become India's largest smartphone vendor. The data in the report suggested that Micromax's market share had grown to 22 percent in India against Samsung's 20 percent. Samsung was quick to refute Canalys and it presented a report from research firm GfK which put its market share at 34.3 percent in Q4 2014, thus reiterating that it still leads the market. CyberMedia Research's report says the same but points out that the Korean company is “losing its earlier firm grip.”

CMR's data shows that total handset shipments in India exceeded 257 million units in 2014. Samsung accounted for 16.5 percent of these shipments while Micromax and Microsoft (Nokia) coming in at 13.3 percent each.

The research firm says that Samsung was seen losing its firm grip on the market and its market share continued on a downward trend throughout the year. On the other hand Micromax gained between April-June 2014 but remained flat during what was left of last year.

Samsung is clearly under pressure from local manufacturers in the country but it appears that the company hasn't lost its crown just yet.
