Samsung has announced that it is bringing the improved Sleep Apnea Detection feature to the Galaxy Ring and recently released Galaxy Watches. This feature will be released in South Korea first, as it has received approval from South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).
Instead of just detecting the absence or presence of sleep apnea signs, Samsung's improved algorithms use AI to analyze breathing data to categorize disturbances occurring during sleep into three specific levels: mild, occasional, and frequent. To get these results, users must record at least five hours of sleep twice within a 10-day period using the Samsung Health Monitor app.
This feature will be released to the Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Watch 9, and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 in South Korea in November, and eventually to the Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Galaxy Watch 8, and the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic. Older models will not get this feature and will stick with the older Sleep Apnea Detection version.
Samsung says its new feature is a preventive wellness monitoring tool for adults to help catch early signs of sleep apnea and is not meant to replace a professional medical diagnosis. Sleep apnea is often linked to hypertension and stroke.
