eSIM support isn't new for Samsung's foldable smartphones. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 both come with eSIM support. So it goes without saying that the successors to these devices will have support for this technology as well.

There are some countries across the globe where eSIM support still doesn't exist. Samsung's home country of South Korea is one of them. That might finally change this year. A new report claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 will be the first eSIM-compatible smartphones to be launched in South Korea.

Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 will kickstart the eSIM era in Korea

Mobile carriers in South Korea still haven't launched eSIM services due to concerns about conventional SIM sales, increase in user churn rates, and the average revenue per user. The South Korean government has been in talks with local carriers to introduce eSIM services since last year. Carriers are now believed to be in the final stages of developing eSIM apps and mobile data services.

The eSIM has been developed as a substitute for the second SIM. Manufacturers don't need to make dual-SIM phones anymore. The eSIM hardware is embedded in the device. Users can simply use one single conventional SIM and add a second number or data plan through the eSIM. No need to swap out SIM cards for the second line.

This also makes it easier for users to switch between carriers. They can easily activate new lines and data plans on the eSIM without having to visit a carrier store. Hence the concerns about increased churn rates. However, it seems that carriers in South Korea are finally coming around to the idea.

In all other markets where eSIM services are already available, you can expect Samsung's new foldables to offer support. Samsung is likely going to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 in the second week of August. The report mentions that Samsung will start taking pre-orders for these devices from August 16. The new foldables are expected to be released on August 26.
