After teasing a new rugged SSD last week, Samsung went ahead today and took the veil off its new durable storage solution called the Portable SSD T7 Shield. Samsung claims this is its most durable portable SSD created to date. The T7 Shield has an IP65 rating for dust and water protection and boasts shock resistance from drops of up to three meters.

The Portable SSD T7 Shield will be available worldwide today. Customers can choose from two storage configurations of 1TB and 2TB, and three color options. The SSD is based on a USB 3.2 Gen2 interface and can deliver sequential read and write speeds of up to 1,050MB/s and 1,000MB/s, respectively.

Like Samsung's previous Portable SSD models, the new T7 Shield offers AES 256-bit hardware encryption and compatibility with Samsung Portable SSD 1.0 and Samsung Magician Software. As far as operating environments go, the Portable SSD T7 Shield supports Windows 7 or higher, Mac OS X 10.10 or higher, and Android Lollipop or higher.

Samsung's new SSD is eco, durable, and starts at $159.99

The new T7 Shield comes in the three color options shown in the image gallery above, and ships inside an eco-friendly package that's one-third the size of the previous Portable SSD generations. Samsung's sustainability efforts are clearly extending beyond the mobile phone segment.

The new SSD ships with USB Type-C-to-C and USB Type-C-to-A cables, and despite its rugged design, the T7 Shield weighs only 98 grams.

Samsung will be selling the variant with 1TB capacity for the suggested retail price of $159.99. The 2TB Portable SSD T7 Shield will set customers back $289.99.
