Samsung is getting close to becoming an Apple M2 chip supplier

Samsung wants to continue to play a part in Apple's ambitious chipset plans. The Korean tech giant is reportedly pushing to secure a position in Apple's supply chain for the M2 processor, similar to how it helped Apple get the M1's production off the ground.

Apple took the PC and mobile world by storm with its latest in-house ARM-based chipset, the M1. The latter silicon replaced Intel in Apple's product lineup, so it led to a big shift in the market. Apple's new chipset powers the company's tablet, notebook, and PC line, so there are a lot of M1 chips out there. Now, the company is developing the M2 chip, and Samsung wants to be a part of the action.

The Apple M1 was partly made possible by Samsung

Samsung Electro-Mechanics played an important role in bringing Apple's M1 chipset to the market. Namely, Samsung supplied Apple with FC-BGA (full-chip ball grid array) substrates that are used for CPUs and GPUs with a high density of circuit connections.

According to industry watchers cited by BusinessKorea, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is now trying to secure its role as an FC-BGA supplier for Apple's next-gen M2 chip.

Samsung hasn't made any official announcements on the matter. However, the company reportedly invested 1.3 trillion won in December to build FC-BGA production facilities in Vietnam and an additional 300 billion won in March towards its existing FC-BGA facility in Korea.
