Ahead of the next major Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung has revealed that it has taken a new step to make its upcoming phones more environment-friendly. The South Korean firm announced that it has developed a new material using discarded fishing nets, and that material is used in the Galaxy S22 series.

As a part of its ‘Galaxy for the Planet' program, the new material developed by Samsung will be used in various upcoming Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The company has used repurposed ocean-bound discarded fishing nets to reduce ocean pollution and improve the sustainability of its product lineup.

It said that it plans to increase the use of recycled PCM (Post-Consumer Material) and recycled paper in its products and packaging in the future and reduce single-use plastics. The company is already using recycled plastic in its mobile chargers and TV remote controllers. It also ships its lifestyle TVs in reusable packaging.

When most people read ocean plastics, they think of bottles and plastic grocery bags, but studies say that over 640,000 tons of fishing nets are abandoned and discarded every year in oceans worldwide. And these fishing nets trap and entangle marine life and pose grave threats to coral reefs and natural habitats. This material even ends up in our food and water sources. So, Samsung is trying to repurpose them and use them in its product lineup.

Samsung says that the development of the new material using discarded fishing nets “marks a notable achievement in the company's journey to deliver tangible environmental actions and protect the planet for generations to come.” The company will continue to uncover additional solutions to make the environment safer for everyone.
