The Galaxy S22 series is expected to be made up of three models, namely the standard Galaxy S22, the Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Same as before, the ‘Plus’ model is positioned somewhat in the middle and it’s likely to have more in common with the base model than the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Leaks and rumors claim to have uncovered some bits and pieces about the Galaxy S22+, from its display characteristics to camera specifications and more.
The exterior design of the Galaxy S22+ is one of the biggest mysteries surrounding it. We all expect Samsung to have redesigned the camera housing for 2022, but nobody knows how it will look like, yet.
We can expect the Galaxy S22+ to have physical buttons on the right edge, a USB-C port and a loudspeaker at the bottom, and an Infinity-O display design, assuming that UPC (Under-Panel Camera) won’t be ready for mass production in very large quantities.
Samsung is expected to equip the Galaxy S22+ with a new Exynos 2200 chipset. The upcoming SoC will be built on a 5nm process, but more importantly, it could make use of a new graphics chip developed by AMD.
The Exynos 2200 variant should go on sale internationally. Samsung is likely to equip the Galaxy S22+ with the rumored Snapdragon SM8450 chipset in a few select markets. This solution by Qualcomm is said to be based on Kryo 780 CPU cores and have an Adreno 730 GPU.
Regardless of the choice of chipset, Samsung is rumored to revert back to a more efficient vapor chamber cooling solution for the Galaxy S22 series.
The flagship lineup’s battery could top out at 65W fast charging, but detailed specifications for each Galaxy S22 variant are missing.
Update: The Galaxy S22+ might bring a serious battery downgrade over the Galaxy S21+. It’s said to feature a 4,500 mAh battery, while the S21+ has a 4,800 mAh battery.
The Galaxy S22+ could have an AMOLED display with a slightly smaller footprint than its predecessor. While the Galaxy S21+ has a 6.7-inch display, the direct sequel is said to be equipped with an AMOLED panel that measures anywhere between 6.5 and 6.6 inches.
Regardless of its size, it’s safe to speculate that the Galaxy S22+ display will be capable of a 120Hz refresh rate. Early reports claim that the display won’t have an LTPO backplane, as this technology will be reserved for the Ultra model.
The Galaxy S22 series could be the first in the lineup to feature the Olympus camera branding. Some rumors hint at a new 200MP main camera, while others claim that the Galaxy S22 series could have an updated 108MP sensor. However, these high-resolution shooters might be reserved for the Ultra model.
More credible is the rumor suggesting that the Galaxy S22+ will have a 50MP main sensor coupled with a 12MP ultra-wide shooter and another 12MP sensor with telephoto capabilities and 3x optical zoom.
Software and Features
Android 12 will be officially out by the time the Galaxy S22+ will be released, and as such, the flagship is expected to ship with Android 12 and One UI 4.0 on top.
Availability and Price
The Galaxy S22+ is rumored to be unveiled at an upcoming Unpacked event in January 2022. Pricing details remain unknown.
