Did you know? My Files in One UI 4.0 has an improved file search engine

When Android 12 One UI 4.0 beta first rolled out for the Galaxy S21 series, we took the firmware for a test run and made a hands-on video talking about more than 60 new features. But, as it turns out, there's more to One UI 4.0 than meets the eye. And today, a Samsung Community moderator in charge of the My Files app revealed a handful of search engine improvements that got added, rather silently, with the release of One UI 4.0.

My Files in One UI 4.0 uses a more advanced search engine that's capable of recognizing typos and phonetic spelling. In addition, users can now search by “synonym” terms, i.e., file types (videos, photos, text, etc.) and file extensions. And the search function is now smarter, as it's capable of finding the correct results even if the search terms get typed in the wrong order.

Samsung confirms Galaxy S22 brings more improvements to My Files

Samsung offers one of the best pre-loaded file manager apps around, and My Files has been getting better at a steady rate lately. With the release of version 12.2 last summer, My Files received other meaningful UI improvements, such as multi-column layouts with cleaner folder structures.

Now, One UI 4.0 paved the way for these new search engine enhancements in My Files, and furthermore, the Community moderator confirmed that more improvements to My Files are in the oven for the Galaxy S22 series, i.e., One UI 4.1. These upcoming changes weren't detailed, but they will be in an upcoming follow-up Samsung Community post, so stay tuned.

So far, Android 12 and One UI 4.0 are available for the Galaxy S21 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. Other phones will follow in the coming months, with the majority of eligible devices expected to run One UI 4.0 by mid-2022. Exact release dates are unpredictable, as bugs can always creep in and delay a launch. Or they can cripple an update after release. Samsung had to halt the One UI 4.0 rollout for the Galaxy S21 series in South Korea (at least) due to issues pertaining to Google Play.
