Exynos 2400 has a bonkers GPU with 4x more compute units than Xclipse 920

More details on the Exynos 2400 chipset, specifically its GPU, have emerged. And at least on paper, the next-gen SoC sounds quite promising. According to the latest, the Exynos 2400 graphics processing unit will have four times more CUs (compute units) than the Exynos 2200 SoC.

The Exynos 2200 SoC was Samsung's first to employ a GPU based on the AMD RDNA2 architecture. This new (at that time) Xclipse 920 GPU used by the Exynos 2200 SoC had three compute units (CU). The next-gen solution will supposedly have four times as many CUs.

Exynos 2400 chip to use RDNA2 GPU with 6WGP

If the new rumor is true, the Exynos 2400 SoC will incorporate a new RDNA2-based graphics chip that boasts 6WGP. “WGP” stands for “Workgroup Processor,” and, in layman's terms, one WGP consists of two CUs (compute units).

The Exynos 2200 Xclipse 920 GPU has three CUs. However, because the Exynos 2400 SoC will supposedly boast a GPU with 6WGP, it technically means that the next-gen chip will boast 12 GPU compute units — four times more than the previous solution.

Samsung has also been working closely with engine and game developers to implement ray tracing technologies into its latest chips, so perhaps the Exynos 2400 SoC will be a powerhouse for mobile gaming enthusiasts and may be the first to really bring ray tracing to the forefront on mobile devices.

Samsung is said to plan on using the Exynos 2400 chip for the upcoming Galaxy S24 flagship phone series. The SoC will supposedly be employed by the Galaxy S24 trio only in select markets, but still, this would go against the strategy laid out by the ongoing Galaxy S23. The 2023 flagship phones use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset exclusively in every market.

The Korean tech giant may also want to upgrade other areas of its next-gen flagship, with one recent report indicating that the Galaxy S24 series may have more RAM as standard. If true, it could make the Galaxy S24 the go-to smartphone for productivity and multitasking-oriented users.
