Introduction
Samsung announced the Galaxy A23 on the same day as its cheaper sibling, i.e., the Galaxy A13. It's a sequel to last year's Galaxy A22 and, likewise, lacks 5G connectivity, but it's not a complete upgrade in every area. Some features were downgraded from last year, while others have improved.
Design
Build quality was a bigger focus for Samsung this year, and as a result, the Galaxy A23 features Gorilla Glass 5 protection for the display, the latter of which has an Infinity V design, a.k.a. V-Cut.
The phone retains a plastic back and frame. It features a rectangular camera hump and a similar sensor arrangement to the Galaxy A52.
Samsung has prepared four color options for the Galaxy A23, including blue, peach black, and white. The phone measures 165.4 x 76.9 x 8.44mm and weighs 195 grams.
Specifications
Samsung has equipped the Galaxy A23 with an octa-core, unspecified chipset, though evidence suggests it's the Snapdragon 680 4G SoC. It sports four cores clocked at 2.4GHz, four CPU cores running at 1.9GHz, and an Adreno 610 graphics chip.
The phone ships with 4/6/8GB of RAM and 64/128GB of built-in storage expandable to 1TB via microSD.
At the core of the Galaxy A23 resides a 5,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging capabilities. However, the wall charger is sold as an optional accessory.
Display
The display is one area where the Galaxy A23 isn't better than the Galaxy A22 4G. The 2022 model foregoes the 90Hz Super AMOLED display in favor of a 6.6-inch TFT LCD with a 60Hz refresh rate.
On the bright side, figuratively speaking, the Galaxy A23's display has a higher resolution of 2408 x 1080, so the image will be crisper, even if animations may not look as smooth.
Camera
Quad cameras have become increasingly popular with each passing year, and the Galaxy A23 also has one such setup.
The device is equipped with a 50MP (f/1.8) primary sensor with PDAF, a 5MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide sensor, a 2MP (f/2.4) macro camera, and a 2MP (f/2.4) depth shooter.
The front-facing camera has a resolution of 8MP, an f/2.2 aperture, and 1080p@30fps recording capabilities.
Software and features
The Galaxy A23 ships to customers with Android 12 and One UI 4.1 preloaded. As always, some hardware-dependent features are missing from this version of One UI 4.1, but it has a modern design nonetheless.
The phone benefits from Knox Security, and it's equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
Availability and price
Samsung officially announced the Galaxy A23 on March 4, 2020. However, at the time, the company didn't have any additional details to share regarding exact pricing and release. Nevertheless, the device shouldn't be that much more expensive than the Galaxy A13, the latter of which debuted for around 200 euros.
