After unveiling its first XR headset prototype titled Project Moohan late last year, Samsung showcased the product's design at the Galaxy Unpacked event. However, no one was allowed to try it last week. Now, the first-ever hands-on video of the headset has been published, revealing all its major hardware and software features.

Samsung XR headset hands-on video reveals design, features

Popular tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee (aka MKBHD) was given first access to try out Samsung's first XR headset prototype, Project Moohan. They revealed that the device runs Android XR and features Gemini AI and Circle to Search.

The headset has at least eight front-facing cameras, two eye-tracing cameras on the inside, a power button and a volume rocker on the top, and a touchpad on the right side. You can see their complete hands-on video below

The headset is made of a mix of materials, including metal, glass, plastic, and fabrics. You can cover the cameras with a face plate to reduce incoming light. You can adjust the fit using the dial on the back of the device. The device is powered by an external battery pack using a USB Type-C power connector.

Once a user wears the device, it automatically detects the user's eyes and automatically adjusts the lenses for optimal sharpness. Users can control everything using their hands and fingers. A single pinch using the index finger and the thumb opens the app launch, which has all the popular Google apps available on Android devices.

It supports wireless peripherals like Bluetooth keyboards and mice. Samsung might even sell first-party controllers for the headset.

App windows can be arranged side by side in a spatial setting (virtual desktop). Apps can open in landscape or portrait orientations, depending on the app. Users can resize app windows by dragging their corners or drag and drop them anywhere on the desktop using app handles above or below the app window. MKBHD said the displays are decently sharp and responsive, and the whole experience is almost as good as the Apple Vision Pro. It isn't clear from the video if the headset has built-in loudspeakers, but we think they do. The device is powered by a Qualcomm chip (likely Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2).

Users can long press the power button to start Circle to Search and search for anything on the screen by circling it using their hands.

They can also talk to Gemini (Advanced), which can see anything they see and get the information they want. It can also arrange the app windows for users or take them to a specific app and perform things inside the app.

The Google Play Store will offer it access to millions of apps and games, and all Android apps and games will readily run on Samsung's first XR headset. Some apps optimized for the XR headset, including Google Maps and YouTube, have immersive experiences and special UI elements

When will Samsung's XR headset launch, and what will its price be?

The headset's price isn't clear yet, but Samsung aims to launch its first XR headset this year. The device could launch before the holiday season or even alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in mid-2025.

Some rumors claim that Samsung's XR headset will undercut Apple's Vision Pro and launch with a price tag of around $2,000. But we can't depend on that information just yet.
