Some of the world's best smartphones, including the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Galaxy S21 Ultra, Apple iPhone 13 Pro, Google Pixel 6 Pro, and the Xiaomi 12 Pro, use LTPO OLED displays made by Samsung. For a couple of years now, Samsung Display was the only firm that made such display panels, but it now has some competition.

According to a new report, the Honor Magic 4 and the Honor Magic 4 Pro is the first smartphone to use a non-Samsung Display LTPO OLED display. Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, mentioned that the Honor Magic 4 Pro's display panel is manufactured by Chinese firms BOE and Visionox.

Honor's new flagship smartphones feature 6.81-inch OLED displays with QHD+ resolution, up to 1,000 nits peak brightness, and can reproduce over a billion colors. The panels can display HDR10+ content and feature up to 120Hz variable refresh rate for smooth content consumption. They also feature under-display fingerprint readers.

While these LTPO OLED displays can't go as bright as Samsung's OLED panels (up to 1,750 nits), they are still bright enough to be used without any significant issue. It remains to be seen how well they actually perform. Samsung Display needs to keep innovating if it doesn't want to face stiff competition from Chinese display firms.
