Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs Fold 8 Ultra: Which one actually replaces your Fold 7?

Most people agree it's generally better to avoid confusion in a product naming scheme. Rebrands can work when necessary, but consistency is just as important.

Samsung challenged that idea at Unpacked with the Galaxy Z8 series. The lineup now consists of three main models instead of two — not counting the Galaxy Z TriFold and Korea-exclusive Z Fold Special Edition.

At first glance, the naming scheme looks straightforward. It isn't.

While the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is the unmistakable direct successor to the Galaxy Z Flip 7, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is not a regular yearly upgrade over the standard Fold series. It's a series spin-off.

If you own a Galaxy Z Fold 7 and are planning to upgrade this year, the phone you're looking for is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 is an entirely new model that introduces a completely new form factor.

Samsung gave the Fold 7's successor the Ultra branding while assigning the familiar Galaxy Z Fold 8 name to the new entry in the series. The Fold 8 distinguishes itself through a wider passport-style aspect ratio and two rear-facing cameras.

It's designed for a different market niche than previous Fold models and the new Ultra, but it's already captured the attention of countless fans, partly because everyone expects Apple to also use a similar wider aspect ratio for its first foldable iPhone.

Due to this change in Samsung's naming strategy, someone upgrading blindly from a Galaxy Z Fold 7 to a Galaxy Z Fold 8 could end up with a very different phone than expected — one they may not like unless they are ready for a fairly significant change.

Make no mistake: By design and hardware, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the true successor to the Fold 7. You'll just have to ignore Samsung's naming convention for a moment and redefine what “standard” means in the Fold lineup. What used to be the regular Fold is now called Ultra.

The Fold 8 Ultra keeps the familiar Fold form factor while refining the formula. It's somehow slightly thinner than the Fold 7, packs upgraded hardware, a new Snapdragon chip, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and a 5,000mAh battery with 45W wired and 20W wireless charging.

Among other upgrades there's Samsung's new Flex Titanium technology, which makes the display crease nearly invisible and helps reduce long-term creasing. The foldable panel is brighter at 3,000 nits and has an anti-reflective coating.

Whether the Ultra branding is justified by Samsung's own definition of “Ultra” is another discussion altogether, and one we may explore in greater depth soon.

For now, the important thing to remember is this: If you're upgrading from a Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the rightful successor. Samsung's decision to reshuffle its phone names may make sense internally, but it's likely to confuse plenty of customers at first glance.

Just remember that, despite the familiar name, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 opens up an entirely new branch of the Fold family rather than filling the spot of a usual yearly Fold successor.
