Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Z Fold 8, Z Flip 8 batteries may wear out faster than their predecessors

They have an endurance rating of 1,200 charge cycles, which is less than that of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7.

TL;DR

  • Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 use larger silicon-carbon batteries that should improve single-charge endurance.
  • EPREL lists those batteries at 1,200 charge cycles before capacity is expected to drop below 80%.
  • That is lower than the 2,000-cycle rating of the Fold 7 and Flip 7 lithium-ion batteries, suggesting shorter battery longevity.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Flip 8 offer significantly larger batteries than their predecessors, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7, thanks to Samsung's adoption of silicon-carbon battery technology, an upgrade Galaxy fans have been requesting for years. Unfortunately, those larger batteries also come with a trade-off.

According to the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL), the batteries in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Flip 8 have an endurance rating of 1,200 charge cycles. In other words, after 1,200 charge cycles, their maximum capacity is expected to fall below 80% of the original capacity. The same is the case with the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

By comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 batteries, which use lithium-ion chemistry, are rated for 2,000 charge cycles, meaning they are expected to retain at least 80% of their original capacity until after 2,000 full charge cycles.

Samsung's new foldables are the first to use silicon-carbon tech, which are generally believed to have a shorter lifespan than conventional lithium-ion batteries. However, whether that's the case here is unclear, as the Galaxy S26 series also have an endurance rating of 1,200 charge cycles despite using lithium-ion batteries.
