Around 2023, Chinese smartphone brands began adopting a new type of battery called silicon-carbon (SiC), while most other mobile makers, including Samsung, continued using traditional lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.
SiC battery packs have a higher energy density than Li-ion units, which means that they can store more power within the same physical space, allowing companies to equip phones with larger-capacity batteries without increasing their size.
Since then, people have been urging Samsung to adopt SiC batteries, hoping it would finally address one of the long-standing shortcomings of most of its phones: smaller battery capacities than competing devices, particularly in its foldable lineup.
The tech giant had been working on bringing this technology to its phones since 2025. Now, after a year of development, the brand has finally introduced it with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Z Fold 8, and Z Flip 8.
Earlier today, Samsung unveiled its latest lineup of flagship foldable smartphones. It offers three devices: Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Galaxy Z Flip 8.
While the new devices bring several upgrades over their predecessors, one of the biggest highlights is the adoption of the silicon-carbon battery technology, making them the brand’s first smartphones to feature it.
Thanks to the switch to silicon-carbon batteries, the company has been able to offer its latest book-style foldable phones with a larger battery capacity than that of their predecessor, without making them larger. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra packs a 5,000mAh battery, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a 4,800mAh unit, up from the 4,400mAh battery in the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
While the Galaxy Z Flip 8 doesn't feature a larger battery capacity, Samsung has used the SiC battery technology to make the phone thinner than its predecessor (13.1mm vs 13.7mm).
This marks Samsung's biggest battery upgrade for its flagship foldable phones in years. It could also mark the beginning of the brand adopting silicon-carbon batteries across its other smartphone lineup, including the Galaxy S, Galaxy A, Galaxy M, and Galaxy F series.
