iPhone 17 Pro Max & Galaxy S25 Ultra

TL;DR

  • Apple is reportedly developing an iPhone Air 2 that could be about 0.4mm thinner than the first model while still improving battery life.
  • The phone is said to keep a titanium frame, and the thinner design would put its thickness around 5.2mm.
  • Samsung may return to the ultra-thin phone race in 2027 with a Galaxy S27 Edge that could use silicon-carbon batteries for better endurance.

Last year, Samsung and Apple briefly entered a competition to create the best ultra-thin smartphone. Samsung released the Galaxy S25 Edge with a 5.8mm profile in May 2025, and Apple followed in September of the same year with the 5.6mm iPhone Air.

Neither the Galaxy S25 Edge nor the iPhone Air had the market impact Samsung and Apple were hoping for. After the first experiment, it seemed as though both companies were ready to step away from the ultra-thin phone niche.

However, recent rumors suggest that Apple is actually working on a sequel, predictably called iPhone Air 2. Here's what the latest leaks suggest:

  • 0.4mm thinner than the original iPhone Air.
  • Improved battery life, despite the thinner profile.
  • Titanium frame, as before.

The original iPhone Air measures 5.6mm, so if the rumors are true, the math suggests the iPhone Air 2 should have a 5.2mm profile.

Will there be a Galaxy S27 Edge?

The big question now is whether or not Samsung will rejoin the ultra-thin phone battle. And according to some rumors, Samsung is planning a comeback in 2027.

Similarly, the company may be aiming to create an even thinner Galaxy S27 Edge, but more importantly, it might fix one of the original Edge's biggest issues: poor battery life.

With the launch of the Galaxy Z8 series, Samsung finally made the leap to Silicon-Carbon batteries. The tech will expand to more smartphone models next year, and Samsung could leverage it to make the Galaxy S27 Edge last longer.

Do keep in mind that neither the Galaxy S27 Edge nor the iPhone Air 2 has been confirmed, but we'll let you know if the rumors and leaks continue.
