TL;DR

  • Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra is expected in 2027 with a thinner, more durable foldable design, IP68 protection, and larger 6.5-inch cover and 8-inch inner displays.
  • It could feature a 200MP triple rear camera system, two 12MP selfie cameras, and support advanced video options like 8K recording and APV.
  • Expected hardware includes a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 for Galaxy chip, up to 16GB RAM, a 5,800mAh battery with 60W charging, and a price of $2,100 or more.

Introduction

The Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra will be Samsung's flagship foldable phone in 2027. It will succeed the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and go head-to-head with Apple's rumored second-generation iPhone Duo.

The foldable device could bring improved durability, faster performance, better screens and cameras, and longer battery life compared to its predecessor.

Design and display

Similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra could feature an ultra-tall form factor. It could use an Advanced Armor Aluminum frame with Corning Gorilla Glass protection on both the front and rear. The phone will likely feature an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance to match the iPhone Duo.

The device is expected to sport an ultra-slim (9mm or thinner) and lightweight design, along with a side-mounted fingerprint reader. It could have a rectangular camera bar instead of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra's vertical camera island.

The Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra should include a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch inner foldable screen. Both will likely feature Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels, 3,000 nits or higher peak brightness, and HDR10+ content playback.

Cameras

The Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra will likely have a triple-camera setup on the rear. Based on Samsung's recent track record, the phone could include a 200MP primary camera with OIS, a 50MP ultrawide camera with autofocus, and a 50MP telephoto camera with OIS.

For selfies, the phone could feature two 12MP front-facing cameras: one on the cover display and the other on the foldable screen.

All cameras on the device will likely be able to record 4K 60fps video, while the rear-facing primary and ultrawide cameras could support 8K 30fps recording. It should also be capable of recording video in the Advanced Professional Video (APV) format. With features like Log and built-in LUTs, users will be able to shoot in flat profiles or their preferred color profiles.

Hardware specifications

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 for Galaxy processor is expected to power the Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra. This 2nm chip offers a faster CPU, a more powerful GPU, and improved connectivity compared to the processor used in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The phone could come with 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR6 RAM and 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of UFS 5.0 storage.

Given the Galaxy S27 Ultra's anticipated battery capacity, the Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra could pack a 5,800mAh battery. It is expected to support 60W fast wired charging and 25W fast wireless (Qi2.2) charging, complete with built-in magnets for Qi2 accessories.

Software and updates

Samsung could launch the Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra with Android 18 and One UI 10 onboard. This new version of One UI is expected to bring a major design overhaul, additional customization options, and advanced Galaxy AI-powered features.

The phone will likely receive seven major Android OS and One UI upgrades, along with security patches for up to seven years after its launch.

Launch, pricing, and availability

The Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra could be announced in July 2027 alongside the standard Galaxy Z Fold 9. It will likely go on sale in late July or early August.

Given the anticipated memory chip shortage in 2027, the device could be priced at $2,100 or even higher in the US market.
