Galaxy Buds On

TL;DR

  • Samsung's Galaxy Buds On have no fixed left or right earbud, so either bud can go in either ear.
  • The earbuds automatically detect which ear they are in and switch audio channels accordingly.
  • They are on sale in Korea for KRW 299,000, with no other-country availability announced yet.

We haven't had a chance to try Samsung's brand-new Galaxy Buds On earbuds yet because they've only just been released in Korea. However, Samsung published a couple of Galaxy Buds On introduction videos on YouTube, and we're starting to learn more about their capabilities.

Samsung has published a couple of Galaxy Buds On unboxing and “how to get started” videos. The latter briefly demonstrates one of the primary ways the Galaxy Buds On earbuds differ from other Buds: They don't have fixed left or right sides.

That is a very unusual design compared to regular earbuds, but the idea sounds great. With the Galaxy Buds On, you don't have to worry about fitting the right earbud to the right ear, no pun intended.

That covers the external design. But what about the audio? If there's no dedicated left or right earbud, how can this not become confusing? What if you place the right earbud into the left ear? Do you have to guess every time?

Don't worry, these earbuds are very clever and have an answer to those questions.

The Galaxy Buds On know which ear they're in

Yup, that pretty much sums it up. There’s no dedicated left or right earbud. You can pop either bud into either ear, and the earbuds automatically detect which side they’re in and adjust the audio channels accordingly.

Samsung's video below demonstrates how you can swap the earbuds from one ear to the other on the fly. The Buds On automatically detect left or right and take care of the rest.

This looks and sounds like a very neat quality-of-life feature, and at the very least, it's something that definitely sets the new Galaxy Buds On apart from Samsung's previous Buds. Still, we will have to see how well it works in practice.

Samsung is now selling the Galaxy Buds On in Korea for KRW 299,000 ($225), but the company hasn't yet announced availability in other countries.

Stay tuned and check out Samsung's unboxing video below for a closer look at the new Buds.
