Samsung has launched every new Galaxy Z Fold device with a long list of upgrades. However, one thing has remained unchanged over the past five generations: the battery capacity.
The brand has used the same 4,400mAh battery in every model from the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, despite people requesting a larger one. That could finally change with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 8.
According to leaks, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will feature a 5,000mAh battery, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to pack a 4,800mAh unit. That represents a 13.6% increase for the Ultra model and a 9% increase for the standard model compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
While those numbers may not seem dramatic at first glance, they are a meaningful generational upgrade in the mobile industry.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 already delivers excellent battery life despite having what is now considered a relatively small battery, especially compared to many foldable phones from Chinese brands. The company has achieved that through highly efficient hardware and software optimization.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 8 are expected to combine their larger batteries with an even more power-efficient processor, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. Together, those improvements could deliver a noticeable boost in battery life.
Even with these larger batteries, Samsung's next book-style foldable phones are likely to trail many Chinese rivals in terms of raw battery capacity, and possibly also Apple's first foldable iPhone. However, battery size alone doesn't determine real-world endurance.
Samsung has consistently shown that efficient hardware and software optimization can help its phones match or even outperform devices with much larger batteries. If it can replicate that with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, the company could set a new benchmark for battery life in the premium foldable segment.
For years, one of the biggest concerns that prospective Galaxy Z Fold buyers have had has been the 4,400mAh battery of these phones. Even though Samsung has managed to extract impressive battery life from it, many people have been hesitant to buy the phone simply because the capacity looked small on paper.
If these leaks prove accurate, Samsung will no longer be asking buyers to trust its software optimization alone. Instead, it will be pairing that efficiency with considerably larger batteries. That combination could finally put those concerns to rest and deliver the battery upgrade fans have been waiting for.
