Samsung's naming convention can be somewhat confusing for someone who has never owned a Galaxy mobile device before.

The “Ultra” branding sticks out on some of its most expensive devices, and if you've ever meant what it represents across its various products, here's a simple guide.

Ultra represents the pinnacle of Samsung's capabilities

On Samsung's conventional bar-style phones, Ultra is reserved for the top-of-the-line Galaxy S flagship. The Galaxy S20 Ultra was launched back in 2020 and it was the first to use the Ultra branding. Every top Galaxy S model has been an Ultra since then.

Simply put, it means you get the biggest screen available on the flagship lineup, the best camera hardware, the best specs, and S Pen support. It also means these are the most expensive models in the lineup.

The branding has already been expanded to Samsung's wearables with 2024's Galaxy Watch Ultra. It's a larger watch with a bigger battery and more outdoor-focused features not available on other Galaxy Watch models. These include an emergency siren that goes up to 85db, enhanced GPS features and a 10 ATM for water resistance.

Samsung's tablets adopted the Ultra branding with the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra back in 2022. Much like on the company's flagship smartphone series, the Ultra tablets offer the largest displays, best-in-class specs, and the best camera setup.

Samsung is now set to bring the Ultra branding to its foldables with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. This would be the direct successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, while the device that gets launched as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 this year will be the much rumored wider foldable.
