Samsung has hired a semiconductor specialist from Apple

While Samsung has been manufacturing its in-house Exynos chipset for a long time, it never really performed the way chips from Qualcomm have. For example, the massive fanfare surrounding the Exynos 2200 featuring the AMD GPU in the Galaxy S22 models quickly died down as soon as it was compared with the Qualcomm Galaxy S22 models. Worse is that Samsung was criticized for limiting the performance of the Galaxy S22 devices powered by the Exynos SoC to prevent overheating.

Well, Samsung is now looking to revise its chip strategy and has apparently already taken some crucial steps towards it. According to a new report by BusinessKorea, Samsung has recently hired an ex-Apple semiconductor specialist, Kim Woo-pyeong, to bolster its new chip strategy. Samsung has appointed Kim Woo-pyeong as the director of the recently established Packaging Solution Center, which is in the Device Solution America (DSA) headquarters.

There's no clarity on what responsibilities Samsung has assigned to Kim

Before joining Samsung, Kim Woo-pyeong worked with Texas Instruments and Qualcomm and later joined Apple for about nine years from 2014. There isn't much detail available on what role Kim has been entrusted with and whether Kim Woo-pyeong will work on the Exynos chipset or not.

Though the details do mention packaging technologies that Samsung is actively showing an interest in to overcome physical limitations. And since Kim has worked with Apple on Bionic processors, his expertise would be crucial.

But this is a surprising move from Samsung, considering Samsung and Apple are rivals in the industry and there are plenty of bitter moments between the two companies. Apple even claims Samsung stole some of its technologies.
