Samsung stood fourth in the smartphone chip market in Q1 2022

As per the latest numbers from Counterpoint Research, Samsung had a revenue share of just 7% in Q1 2022 in the global smartphone chipset market. Qualcomm was the number one brand, with a revenue share of a whopping 44%. Apple's revenue share was 26% during the quarter, while MediaTek's revenue share was around 19%.

Unisoc, the up-and-coming chipset brand, had a 3% revenue share. Huawei, whose international smartphone market has vanished after the trade ban by the US, had a revenue share of just 1%.

The report claimed that Samsung's shipments actually increased compared to Q4 2021 due to the launch of the Exynos 1280, which is used in the Galaxy A33 5G, Galaxy A53 5G, and the Galaxy M33 5G. However, since Samsung used Snapdragon chipsets in more Galaxy S22 variants this year, its revenue share was lost to Qualcomm.

Rumors claim that Samsung is going back to the drawing board to make custom chipsets for flagship Galaxy smartphones. The company has reportedly created a team of around 1,000 engineers to work on such chipsets, and the first such product could be used in the Galaxy S25 in 2025.
